The Allen & Heath xone:DX running with Serato's ITCH software at BPM 2009.

After a short period of teasing (yes - I'd want to brag about something like this as well), thexone:DX launched on its maiden voyage into the big wide public world. And seemingly to much acclaim as well. The A&H stand was pretty rammed as people were desperate to maul what was possibly the hottest thing at the show. And via the somewhat dodgy medium of my iPhone and Kodak Zi6, I was able to shot an incredibly bad video. I'm so sorry.

And of course, there are photos:

The video pretty much tells the complete story really. The one thing it doesn't say is that this is with ITCH v1.4 rather than v2, and was the same across all the ITCH FX controllers at BPM. This may mean something really cool like v2 will come with even more hot stuff - who knows just yet. For those who were there, I will mention that the units on display were still to be finalised. The deck buttons were still hard with little movement - these will be better when the production models hit, and the outputs are likely to change a little. And some of the markings will go - the fader dots for example. I can't say I'm sad about that.

In terms of failsafe, you can link up an external source like an iPod and play through while you reboot your computer. And because of the way it works with the aux channel, you can beatmatch to the external source in ITCH when it comes back online.

One thing to mention is Traktor. While this is an ITCH based controller, A&H stated right at the start that they wanted the xone:DX to be an open controller so that any MIDI software could work with it. And it seems that it does as A&H have already got it working just fine with Traktor. This is great news all round and a real win-win for everyone. If the xone:DX can work with Traktor (or any other software for that matter), A&H will probably sell more units, which means Serato make more money and there are more (in this case) 4 deck controllers in the market place. It's all well and good having 4 decks in Traktor, but you need to have choice over hardware. With ITCH going 4 decks, this can only be good news for Native really, especially given the apparent disdain some people hold for ITCH.

From the word I had at BPM, the xone:DX is going to be a real winner for A&H. Some people may like to think of it as a toy, perhaps too small and lament the lack of scratchy platters, but the xone:DX is going to be huge for a particular sector. You really need to play with it to truly understand.

There has been a distinct lack of A&H reviews round these parts, but we're like bezzie mates and stuff now so we're getting one in as soon as they're available.

Questions? If I can answer them, I know A&H are hanging around these parts on the regular, and if they don't answer themselves, they'll certainly channel their responses through me like I'm some sort of medium.
