One of the biggest annual events on television is just around the corner. Yes, Shark Week is coming to Discovery at the end of July, and EW has our first look at this year's host, Andy Samberg...or, sorry, their Chief Shark Officer. Samberg will not only host Discovery's 24th go at the week of the shark BUT he's also simultaneously filming his own special called Shark City.

When asked about the hosting gig, Samberg simply replied that "everyone loves Shark Week. I love Shark Week. I was just so flattered. The pitch was that I would get to fly to the Bahamas and literally swim with sharks, and I was thinking there's no way I would ever have the balls to do that on my own, so I went for it." I'm a huge Samberg fan, and although I don't PVR shark week or anything, I do tend to gravitate towards Discovery while it's on. Having Samberg host will only encourage my remote.

First look at Andy Samberg, Chief Shark Officer



Did Andy Samberg have any reservations about being the host — or Chief Shark Officer — for Discovery’s 24th annual Shark Week, which kicks off July 31? “I had reservations at the restaurant of destiny,” he jokes to EW. “It has very little to do with me on the surface, which to me was a perfect sign that I should do it. Everyone loves Shark Week. I love Shark Week. I was just so flattered. The pitch was that I would get to fly to the Bahamas and literally swim with sharks, and I was thinking there’s no way I would ever have the balls to do that on my own, so I went for it.”

This week’s issue of Entertainment Weekly has the first look at Samberg swimming with Caribbean reef sharks for his own Aug. 4 special, Shark City. “My buddy John Solomon, who’s a director and a writer at SNL came with me. We were doing a bunch of wrap-arounds for the show, and I’d been floating there in the water, and I was like, ‘Okay, I think we got that. Should we chum the water and get some sharks over here?’ And everyone on the boat kinda looked down, kinda looked away, like, ‘Yeah, yeah, we should, um, get some sharks over here,’” Samberg recalls. “It turned out that there had been huge sharks all around me the entire time, and I just hadn’t realized it because they were under the water.”



Samberg also shot footage at his CSO desk in the water, which was quickly surrounded by sharks after some chumming. “They were definitely dumping tons of bloody meat into the water all around me. I knew that they needed to do it to get the sharks over there, but there’s also a part of me that was like, have you guys heard of Photoshop? Like, we live in an era where you don’t have to actually do this. But I guess they’re purists over at Discovery,” he says. He admits falling backwards blindly into sharks, even if they’re gentle Caribbean reefs, scared him. “But I had to just kind of ignore it. I went into Braveheart mode,” he says.

“If you want to know the coolest part,” Samberg says of filming the special, “it was getting to go in the little one-man submarine and, like, drive through a bunch of tropical fish while they tickle my feet. I just kept asking everyone if they’d seen my son Nemo.”

Watch a tease of that outing in the exclusive video below. (It is, perhaps, the closest we’ll get to a musical number from him: “I mean, I think LL Cool J already nailed the shark song,” he says.)

As part of Samberg's duties, he's also the face of Discovery's Shark Week Challenge. At sharkweekchallenge.com, fans can post their own 30-second Shark Week commercials. A select 16 will make it into a tournament bracket game, and the two spots receiving the most votes will actually air on Discovery. "That’s definitely a fun part, encouraging people out there to do their own Shark Week stuff," Samberg says. "Like, I’d always enjoyed Shark Week, but I didn’t realize until I did this how much people love Shark Week. Every single person I’ve told that I’m doing this has to take a pause and be like, No [pause] Way. There’s a real passion and excitement for Shark Week, so I lucked out."

Discovery Channel broke with tradition last year, naming its first non-Discovery-star to host Shark Week : CBS late-night personality Craig Ferguson. Shark Week last year was sampled by the largest audience ever: Nearly 31 million people checked it out for at least six minutes and some, of course, watched much longer.

Coincidence? I think not.

Neither does Discovery, which Wednesday named another broadcast TV late-night comic to host this year’s Shark Week. That someone is Andy Samberg, a member of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” cast.

Samberg has a better agent than Ferguson; we know this because he’s gotten a better title. Samberg will be Shark Week’s CSO — Chief Shark Officer.

Shark Week is “about being scared out of your swim trunks, but it’s also about being entertained and learning something new,” Discovery Channel President Clark Bunting said in Wednesday’s announcement, wisely leaving the funny business to Samberg.

Discovery says Shark Week is the longest-running programming event in cable history.

“Everyone loves Shark Week. It’s the Bill Cosby of week-long television blocks dedicated to sea animals,” Samberg said...

The position of Chief Shark Officer has been filled by Discovery.

SNL star Andy Samberg won the position after a long and arduous process of blood typing, insurance verification, and wetsuit fittings.

Discovery Channel today announced the appointment of its first ever Chief Shark Officer (CSO), Andy Samberg.

As CSO, Samberg will host the network’s 24th annual Shark Week celebration, cable’s longest running programming event and the official mark of summer. He will film on-air wraps for the weeklong event, host a Shark Week special and may even take the plunge and dive with the apex predators.

“Shark Week is a summertime celebration. It’s about being scared out of your swim trunks but it’s also about being entertained and learning something new. Andy Samberg, a comedian and innovator, is the perfect person to bring those elements together and represent Discovery for our biggest week of the year,” said Discovery Channel President and General Manager Clark Bunting.

Said Samberg: “I’m overjoyed about being appointed CSO. Everyone loves Shark Week. It’s the Bill Cosby of week-long television blocks dedicated to sea animals.”

As Victoria mentioned, the Justin Timberlake collab is likely Mother Lover. The Akon one is I Just Had Sex. The Nicke Minaj one is The Creep, and the Rihanna one is likely the Emmy nominated Shy Ronnie (and maybe the sequel, Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie and Clyde). I'm also hoping to see On the Ground and Great Day. My favorite ones they missed from Incredibad would be Young Chuck Norris, My Testicles, and Harpoon Man (and Iran So Far, but they tried to release that already).

TURTLENECK & CHAIN features collaborations with Akon, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna – with more guest collaborators soon to be unveiled.

The group will premiere the music video “We’re Back!,” the third single off the new album on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon Friday April 1. The single will be available on iTunes immediately following the video premiere, marking the beginning of the iTunes “Countdown to Turtleneck & Chain” promotion. Singles will be unleashed throughout the coming weeks, and each single purchase will count toward a discounted "Complete My Album" purchase on iTunes that is redeemable on the May 10th album street date.

The album's gold-selling first single, "I Just Had Sex (feat. Akon)", has already become a smash hit, with digital sales in excess of 500,000 since its December 18th release and YouTube views for the music video reaching over 75 million. The group also performed the song live at 2011 Comedy Awards with Akon and The Roots, which will premiere Sunday April 10th on Comedy Central.

The album's second single, "The Creep (feat. Nicki Minaj and John Waters)" has already garnered YouTube views in excess of 16 million and counting. And the single has everybody that hears it "doing the creep."

As Victoria mentioned, the Justin Timberlake collab is likely Mother Lover. The Akon one is I Just Had Sex. The Nicke Minaj one is The Creep, and the Rihanna one is likely the Emmy nominated Shy Ronnie (and maybe the sequel, Shy Ronnie 2: Ronnie and Clyde). I'm also hoping to see On the Ground and Great Day. My favorite ones they missed from Incredibad would be Young Chuck Norris, My Testicles, and Harpoon Man (and Iran So Far, but they tried to release that already).
