JaxScene 2011

It's been three years and nearly to the day that JaxScene was started by Tom P. Lots of posts for the love of the show coolest things happening in the city and making it better. No matter what JaxScene is to become from here on out, it will never lose the original idea.

This is a growing city and there's twice as many art shows and other event since JaxScene first started; I certainly hope we did our part in letting people know where everything is and showing what happen during the events.

It's been a lesson in the use of cameras, event planning, website design, and scene networking. There's a lot to look forward to. There's more to do and see. There will be more contributors and the possibility of Tom P. coming back.

I've been in contact with column writers, photographers, and people; already covering the scene. They now have a outlet. I plan to have a JaxScene very accessible to anyone who wants to contribute with only a few guidelines. If you're interested yourself, don't hesitate to email me at jaxscenedavid@gmail.com.

I don't want people to think that jaxscene is about a elite few, myself, or just wanting to cover the rare, crunchy, or what is only considered to be cool by a certain group. If something inspiring is happening at a library, I'd like to know. If something different is happening at a venue that typically wouldn't host such an event, that would be great too. I also wouldn't mind seeing more events in support of a cause. Don't worry though, I still like to see the party pics.

The relaunch is no doubt going to be slow at start. I myself still have to barrow cameras to use and still have to rile the new contributors. The reoccurring posts of things to do is still under construction. I want to have more use of technology when it comes to how I do the things to do posts. Nonetheless, I am inspired by the poll numbers.

For right now, I'm just happy with the new design. There will be slight changes for aesthetic effect and the restoration of links to our family blogs on the right.

JaxScene hardly updated [web poll featured]

As you can see if you still visit this site, it's sitting unused and out of date. This is because, among other reasons, a loss in interest.

If you want something bad enough, you know, you will set out to make it happen. I myself have been trying to keep it going but hiccup after hiccup I got burnt out.

The service of things to do was great but Facebook events make this sort of thing obsolete. The hope in continuing things to do was to list really obscure or neat events you just wouldn't hear about unless you were in the know.

Which brings me to another point; you would have to be in the know. You would have to afford to be out daily getting involved and taking photos of it. I couldn't do this for the longest because of severe money troubles.

It takes a team for any media outlet to survive. There were only small bit of contributors and as the time line fallows, proved tiring. Also, we had different ideas and sometimes they conflicted. We all had other things we concerned ourselves with.

It's no question that the bread and butter of JaxScene was media. Our photo hits sky rocketed in 08 and still maintains visitors today. My ideas that fell flat were to expand to a podcast, audio interviews, JaxScene TV, and have enough contributors to be in many places to cover more.

But who has that type of energy right? With personal feats that I face, it's hard to stay motivated, let alone to motivate others. Is there a place for JaxScene still in this city? Did it have something that other blogs that cover their scene didn't have? Did it help anyone other than JaxScene members?

If JaxScene should be relaunched I think it should be very energetic. It should have the people and networking behind it. It should have more written articles. It should truly help others and bring in revenue for those working for it. JaxScene should be an outlet to any artist wanting a bigger audience. It should be a union with the power to host its own events. It should comprise of individuals who already change the scene around them to what they want to see happen.

It's possible.

JaxScene is just us. A name with a large web hit count. It has been taken seriously by other big cities as indicated by emails from publications and music labels. I think we only scratched the surface. There are no real obstacles to something like a JaxScene blog here when even the people who say Jacksonville is whack also agree it will always need doers and movers despite what it looks like to others who don’t get it.

State of the Re:Union show fundraiser

Note worthy because the SOTRU host Al Letson really has his eye gazed at local people, places, and stories.

Here is some information:

NPR’s Jacksonville-based ‘State of the Re:Union’ will host its first annual fundraiser ‘SOTRU - A Celebration of Community, presented by WJCT Public Broadcasting and Biscottis; - on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, 6:30pm – 9:00pm at the Hicks Auditorium at the Jacksonville Public Library. Featuring a cocktail hour complete with drinks and passed hors’doeurves, the highlight of the evening will be a performance by ‘State of the Re:Union’ host and spoken word artist Al Letson. Tickets are $50 and all money raised from the event will go to support the show, which airs nationally on more than 170 stations.

As a public radio show, ‘State of the Re:Union’ is generously funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The show, however, is responsible for employing other fundraising tactics in order to continue growing its multimedia platform. Accompanying ‘State of the Re:Union’s’ narrative of explored communities and the stories that lie within, are documentary shorts, music podcasts, blogs, and photo documentation – all of which dig deeper into the communities visited and the people who call each location home.

The goal of ‘SOTRU - A Celebration of Community, presented by WJCT Public Broadcasting and Biscottis’ is to raise $15,000 – to be matched dollar for dollar by J.Wayne and Delores Barr Weaver, owners of the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the fundraising event’s $15,000 Challenge Grant Sponsors. What’s more, the Weavers have donated an invitation for 2 to sit in the owner’s suite at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium - to be used for a Jaguars’ game during the 2010-2011 season. The invitation will be raffled off at the event.

Tom P. and Calder Yates are trying to collect names of all the Jacksonville bands and their members to create a family tree that Calder Yates is going to map out.

Duval Rally Walk To Veto SB 6 at Friendship Park 4.14.10

Yesterday there was a rally in Friendship Park for people that support Governor Crist decision to veto Senate Bill 6. The bill would base teachers pay on student performance on standardized test, eliminating teachers tunure and abolish extra pay for advanced degrees. Today Crist announced he vetoed the bill.

JaxScene yard sales

I want to start featuring yard sales from anyone, to be listed along with that day's things to do. The idea came from seeing so many signs pop up as people are moving into or away from places. It's also a good idea because it's that time to save money and pick up some stuff for cheap.

If you want your yard sale listed email me at jaxscenedavid@gmail.com or feel free to comment on the day of things to do.

I will most likely limit it to the areas of Downtown/Springfield/Riverside/Avondale/San Marco/Murray Hill.
