The suicide bomber killed almost eight Pakistani soldiers.The attack took place near Wana, the main town in South Waziristan in Pakistan's restive northwest. This tribal area is thought to be like a paradise for al-Qaeda and Taleban-linked militants. Pakistan troops have been positioned in the area to fight growing militancy, but attacks have continued.
The vehicle was driver by the bomber into a checkpoint that was protecting a deployment of Pakistan's Frontier Corps. The attack came two days after suspected US missile strikes in the region killed around 20 people.
