More women are being caught driving while intoxicated, with the number of female drunk drivers rising nearly 30 percent over the last three years in South Korea.
About 1,130 people are caught for the driving under the influence everyday, according to Korean National Police Agency data
The proportion of female drunken drivers is on the rise in South Korea, where an average of 144 people a day were killed or injured alcohol-related accidents, national police said Tuesday.
According to the drunk driving status report of 2006-08, annual arrests increased from about 350,000 to more than 400,000 this year.
The report said women drunken drivers were the fastest-growing group, although men drivers are the overwhelming majority of offenders.
The data showed the number of women arrested for driving under the influence rose from 31,501 in 2006 to 46,677 through November 2008.
“We urgently need to stop the rise of drunken drivers and its victims through measures, including more strict punishment,” said Lim Doo-Sung, a lawmaker who released the report.
Why More Women is Drinking in South Korea?
In the past, the Korean drinking culture was dominated by men, but now more women are resorting to alcohol as a way of releasing their stress.
These are mostly working women in their 20s and 30s who usually gather to drink in small groups of two or three after work. They seem to have been motivated by Korean liquor advertisements, which have been increasingly using women as models.
Every year in South Korea, more money is spent promoting the use of alcohol than any other product. Perhaps through its elaborate and creative marketing, the most basic, yet important fact about alcohol is often overlooked — alcohol is a drug — the most commonly used and widely abused psychoactive drug in the world.
