Disco Scratch Radio 48 – UK Hip-Hop Legend MC Mell ‘O’ Part 1

Disco Scratch Radio 48 – MC Mell ‘O’ Part 1
In his search the True Perspective of the UK Hip-Hop history, our Brother Waxer has interviewed MC Mell ‘O’, one of the Koolest, Positive and Knowledgable MC's the UK has ever produced.
Disco Scratch Radio on Sensei.FM Here

"The UK has produced some incredible MCs… this small island we call home has had B Boys, Poppers, Lockers, DJs & Writers from a very early era in the development of the UK music scene. The man I spoke with tonight lived through the inception of the UK Hip Hop scene, became actively involved in it RIGHT FROM THE START and continues to represent up til now.
If you don’t know this British rappers heritage, this interview will bring you up to speed… at least in his formative years. The interview is only the first part of this legacy. Mello goes into proper depth with the melting pot of people in Battersea, South London that influenced his career and helped him carve his individual path through the fledgling scene right to present day. Not many MCs can rip up a mic after reppin’ for nearly 30 years! Here’s one that can and do it with depth, professionalism, attitude & knowledge.
I’ll be analysing the interview over the coming week and updating the database to reflect the people, places & subjects covered in this interview. Until then, pour some knowledge into your ear canals, add a couple of spoonfulls of dub, roots, funk & soul into the mix, sprinkle it with rough rhymes, B Boy mentality and fold in staying power, cook for 30 years & you’ll get Mell ‘O’."

Rosy One's - Cause We Got Style "European Hip Hop Posing From 80's and Early 90's" Book Out This Month

Cause We Got Style
"Posing is the art of self-expression. It comprises appearance, fashion, accessories and the art of arranging the body or face in a good pose. Cause We Got Style! is a collection of early European hip hop pose photos. Information about the new American youth culture was still hard to come by, and the youths of Europe had to work out their own ways. Together with graffiti, breakdance, rapping and djing, clothes and attitude were the means of expression. You had to be innovative and use what was available, add details and make your own accessories in orderto stand out and look fresh! Most of the photos in Cause We Got Style! are snapshots taken by kids on their way to a concert, next to a freshly painted graffiti piece, in the street or in the bedroom. The result is as charming as it is revealing. This is a glimpse into a very private photo album, dusted off after years of lying around in the closet. Cause We Got Style! shows photos of unknown teenagers as well as now well-known artists like Goldie, Mode 2, Can 2 and Bando. It contains texts by Akim “Zebster” Walta, D.D.Fresh, Queen Hanifa, Mr Puppet and Dan Tikaret among others. An astonishing document of the early days of European hip hop!"

"Portraits De Cite'" A French Hip-Hop City Photos From The 1990's (Book Review)

Portraits De Cite' (2008)
French Hip-Hop City Photos from the 1990's
With work by: Bakir Ziani, Richard Hort, Ambroise Mendy, Jean-Paul Gentile, Abdel Ben Massaoud & Mohamed Boughamni

On a recent trip to France I found this in a book shop, they really celebrate a varirty of French people representing Hip-Hop culture. Here are some of the highlights.

Raiders Caps

From an outsider, the French Hip-Hop scene has always looked amazing. In the 1990's Movies like La Haine, Graffiti Books like Paris Tonkar, groups like NTM, Assasin, Iam, MC Solaar, DJs like DJ Dee Nasty, Crazy Fast Camel (DMC Finalists); Graffiti Writers like Tran, Nasty, Color, Kay One GT (and his French Hip-Hop shop in London) and U.K. legend Mode2 (moving to Paris); and the many French B-Boy/B-Girls making a huge presence in the International Hip-Hop scene.

Headspin

Obviously France is a huge country, so the market is enormous and so can support a proper functioning Hip-Hop industry. Unlike the U.K., the French government also passed a law forcing French Radio Stations to play a large percentage of French Language music. This in turn has created a large selection of French Hip-Hop artists, and labels to sign them.

B-Boys

In the 1990's French Hip-Hop only Radio stations like SkyRock and others supported this progressive movement, and many local councils all over France have laid on big budget community Hip-Hop Events that feature B-Boy, Mcing, Dj and Graffiti. It is common for French Artists to do collaborations with high profile MC's like Nas, CNN, Wu-Tang, the late Guru and many others, French Graffiti Mags can be bought in the smallest village News Agents, and B-Boys who travel the country and world doing showcases. It would be useful for the UK scene to take note and learn from our French Family!

Bouncing Cats is the inspiring story of one man's attempt to create a better life for the children of Uganda using the unlikely tool of hip-hop with a focus on b-boy culture and breakdance. The film features narration by Common and interviews with Will.I.Am, and K'Naan.

Breakdance Project Uganda

Breakdance Project Uganda from Jon Smith on Vimeo.

The aims of this project are to empower and positively inspire the youth and children through breakdance plus other elements of hiphop by:

RUBBLE KINGS: NEW YORK CITY STREET GANGS AND THE MUSIC THAT BROUGHT THEM TOGETHER

Puerto Rock Power!

Shan Nicholson, Kool Skool Family and director of Downtown Calling, is just putting the finishing touches on his new documentary on New York City gangs called Rubble Kings.

RUBBLE KINGS TRAILER from shan nicholson on Vimeo.

"From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled New York City. Beyond the idealistic hopes of the civil rightsnmovement lay a unfocused rage. Neither law enforcement nor social agency could end the escalating bloodshed. Peace came only through the most unlikely and courageous of events that would change the world for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop culture."
