Anti-war campaigner Brian Haw R.I.P.


The British anti-war campaigner, Brain Haw, has died after a long battle with lung cancer. The 62 year old lived in a tent outside the Houses of Parliament in London for the last ten years to protest British foreign policy.

MC Merlin Cousin of Smiley Culture spoke to the Press and guests
Yesterday more than 200 people attended a press conference at Karibu Education Centre in Brixton, with family, supporters and Community members gave their feelings and more background information on the very strange alledged Suicide Death of Wealthy Reggae Star Smiley Culture in Police Custody. Another Meeting will be organized next Thursday also in Brixton, more details can be found on the excellent Transpontine blog, which is where we found the Press Conference video.

Smiley Culture Legend of Saxon Sound Sadly Passes Away Today in Police Raid

Reggae Star Smiley Culture, Legend of Saxon Sound has sadly passed away today, during a police drugs raid on his home. The famous UK Reggae Toaster, originally a member of the Legendary Saxon Sound System, the London based Reggae Sound was famous as a nurturing ground for many of the UKs top early Reggae and Hip-Hop MCs and DJs. Smiley Culture had huge cross over hits with Cockney Translation and Police Officer, both songs dealt with identity, Racism, Police Brutality, and also highlighted the difficulties of the Black Community, in 1980's Thatcher's Britain. Smiley Culture, along with Tippa Irie, Maxi Priest and several other successful UK based Reggae Stars, helped promote modern Caribbean Diaspora culture to the UK, and spread the music to a wider audience. Smiley Culture was also the cousin of MC Merlin, an early UK Recording Hip-Hop MC.

As of Oct 7, 2010 I’ve been informed by Columbia University that after 20years, our beloved radio show will come to an end.

In Oct of 1990 two friends Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito Garcia started a radio show that revolutionized how we look at hip hop programing. Eight years later, after Stretch left the show, Bobbito continued with Lord Sear what was known then as the CM Famalam Radio Program.
Two years after that, I joined the show until Bobbito and Lord Sear’s retirement in 2003. From that point on the Squeeze Radio Show has remained a pillar in the hip hop community in New York City and has been named the best radio show in NY by Time Out Magazine.

In the past, the program introduced NY and the world to Wu-Tang, Nas, Jay-Z, Big L, Fat Joe and more.

Since 2003, The Squeeze Radio show has introduced NY and many listeners in the world to Kanye West, Consequence, Lupe Fiasco, Blu, Roc Marciano, Torae, Tanya Morgan and more.

I ask for your help. Lets show C.U. that this show is important to not just to us but to the community in general. If you are an artist that’s been in the show, a listener, a Hip Hop fan or just someone that’s tired of how we are being pushed around and shut down let your voice be heard. ABBEY LINCOLN - Vocalists, Actress & Activist R.I.P.

"Hello People, Bonjour a tous. Oi do Brooklyn,

A few days ago the world lost one of its dearest and most talented female vocalists, actress and activist. ABBEY LINCOLN.
I'm extremely sad as she had become one of my favorites. She was not doing well health wise during the last couple of years. A 50 year recording and performing career, married to Max Roach for 8 years. Golden Globe nominated actress for her role in "For The Love Of Ivy" (1968) with Sidney Poitier and music by Quincy Jones.

I never had a chance to see her performing live but did meet her once to offer her my mother's book "JAZZ ZOOM" where she was interviewed and photographed.

Summer 2005... After a long phone conversation, I finally convinced Abbey to personally deliver the book at her home. The visit ended up lasting 3 hours.
Asked me who I was, questions about Desdemone (mama) who she had met a few times, all this over a glass of red wine. Bien sur.
She slowly looked at the book, page by page, once stopping shedding a tear, touching the pictures. Recited a couple of poems, sang a few melodies. I was stunned and floating.
She showed me her home photo gallery which included photos off her and many Jazz Legends: Monk, Bird, Coltrane, Dizzy, Miles, you name them... A photo museum.
Before leaving she offered me a re-mastered DVD copy of "Nothing But A Man" (movie she starred in 1964), she had just received 10 copies.
What more can I say? What an encounter!!!
I was so touched that I sent her flowers a few days later.

Dyer FDC

It is with great sadness to report South London Graffiti Legend Dier FDC has passed away due to long running health issues. Throughout the 90's and early 2000's Dyer, alongside Char, Ser, Shred and the FDC crew dominated the South London Graff scene. Everyone who knew him will tell you he was a real character, free spirit and one of a kind.



"For Tizer and me, Dier and the FDC crew were a big influence on us, and I met him quite a few times, and had a lot of respect for him. I remember one time hanging out with Dier and Hox, and they were talking about going fishing. The image of Hox and Dier fishing to me was really funny. Dier said, "yeah Shucks!!! Its not all about Graff you know! We will go some time" Unfortunately I never did have the opportunity to go fishing. Our regards go out to his family and friends" - Shucks One ID

DJ Leacy 1971-2004 R.I.P.

Break DJ Leacy was a UK Breaks DJ who redifined the modern B-Boy DJ, by digging and popularizing more than just the traditional breaks. In the mid-90's along with his brother "Aiden Orange "Leacy, they put on a B-Boy Jam called Battle Royal and invited alot of the worlds best to Battle. The B-Boy scene was ignored by the mainstream "Hip-Hop industry" and the jam helped to inspire a new generation of B-Boys and reaffirm the UK's place on the International B-Boy stage. DJ Leacy went on to be the official Bboy Masters Pro-Am DJ and was legendary on the B-Boy circuit. Sadly he passed away in 2004 but his impact on the B-Boy scene is undeniable.

Koneeroc interviewed him at the 2003 Miami Pro/Am. It really illustrates his hard work ethic and Hip-Hop's positive competition tradition


His B-Boy mix CDs are standard at B-Boy training sessions and his Break Compilations shut down a lot of competitors, (at least they stopped some of the phone inquirers)
