Two for Tuesday

First up, a quick one from this morning. I had timed myself so that I wouldn't spend more than 45 minutes on it, so there's not much detail. I kind of like the mood of it though.

The second sketch is a commission for Steven Gettis' awesome collection in which he has artists draw their favorite literary figure, author, or character. I'm not going to post my contribution here, because I want you to go to his site and browse through the amazing array of talent he has commissioned over the past decade. You can see it by clicking the link below-

Hey Oscar Wilde! It's clobberin' time!!!

An incredible teenage mum story

She looks like a proud teenager posing with her little brother and six sisters for a family photograph. But incredibly Pamela Villarruel is the mother of all these seven children.
And she gave birth to all of them by the time she was 16.

Argentine teenager Pamela Villarruel poses with her seven children outside her parents' home in the town of Leones in Cordoba Province, northern Argentina, May 11, 2008.

Pamela has more children than any other teenage mum in the world and doctors have described her as a "scientific rarity".
She gave birth to her son when she was 14 then had two sets of triplets in two years.
"Every day is a struggle but I wouldn't change anything," says Pamela, who is just 17. "They are my little miracles. It's exhausting, but the most important thing is that all my children are happy and healthy. I'll be the best mum I can possibly be."

Pamela, the youngest of six children, is currently living with her mother Magdalena, a cleaner, and her disabled dad Jose in Leones, a farming town 300 miles from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires. She no longer sees the three fathers of her children.

The father of Pamela's first son abandoned them, the father of the first set of triplets was forced out of the house by the family for beating her, and Pamela refuses to identify the father of the more recent triplets.

Until she was 12 Pamela was just like any schoolgirl, excelling in maths and gossiping about clothes and the latest pop bands. Then she met a local boy. "I thought I was in love and wanted to be close to him so we had sex," she says. "I was almost 13 when we did it for the first time. Then I fell pregnant.

"I was terrified as I was so young, but my mum was very supportive, as she had her first baby when she was still young. But I had a miscarriage at three months, which was very frightening." Pamela's mother told her about the importance of contraception, yet five months later she was pregnant again by a new boyfriend, 17-year-old Miguel Gonzalez, from the nearby town of Marcos Juarez.

"I never thought I'd get pregnant again and didn't take precautions," says Pamela. "I was in love with Miguel and thought we would be together forever. I was naive."

Abortion is illegal in Argentina, except in extreme cases such as rape, so Pamela, then 13, had to have the baby. Her son Lisandro was born in June 2005 when she was 14.

"Miguel moved in with us in and tried to support me but it was difficult and after six weeks he went back to his family," she says.

Soon afterwards she began seeing a new boyfriend, 18-year-old Ariel Benitez, an unemployed builder. Within weeks she was pregnant again. "I really loved him and he loved me too," she says. "I know I should have been using contraception but stupidly we didn't. I can't really explain why not."

But Pamela was stunned when a scan showed she was expecting triplets. "I couldn't believe it," she says. "Nobody in my family had even had twins before."

Pamela went into labour two months prematurely. In July 2006 she gave birth by caesarean section to three girls - Ludmila, Macarena and Candela - weighing 3lb 12oz, 3lb 14oz and 3lb 15oz. She says: "It was a very complicated birth. I suffered a lot afterwards.

I was so ill I thought I was going to die.

"Ariel stayed with me through my pregnancy but he left when the triplets were four or five months old." Neighbours and friends rallied round and donated clothes, nappies, shoes and milk. Soon Pamela started seeing a new teenage boyfriend, Franco, and her frantic mother inquired about getting her sterilised.

Magdalena was told she would need a special order from a judge as Pamela was under 21, so instead the young mum began having contraceptive injections. But after forgetting to have just one jab Pamela became pregnant again and a scan revealed she was expecting another set of triplets.

She says: "It was much more of a shock as I realised how difficult it would be with seven children." And last month Pamela gave birth to Martina, Morena and Magali - weighing between 3lb 11oz and 3lb 13oz - five days before her 17th birthday.

Pamela, 17, bore all seven children in just three pregnancies, having her first boy in 2005 when she was 14 and the other six girls in two deliveries of triplets in the following two years.

Dr Jose Alberto Oviedo, who supervised the birth of all the triplets, is convinced Pamela's incredible brood are a world first. "There are no recorded cases of any woman giving birth to two sets of triplets consecutively without IVF treatment," he says. "As far as I know there are no girls her age with as many children. The odds are astronomical."

Her triplets are non-identical - each time Pamela produced three eggs, rather than the usual one, which were all fertilised.

The council in Leones built Pamela a small house after she gave birth to her first set of triplets, but with seven young children to look after Pamela moved back in with her mother.

It's a tight squeeze - along with her seven children, her mother and father, two of her brothers are still at home and the family get by on social security of £80 a month. "With seven children I need a lot of help but I hope to move back into my little house." she says.

Mother Offers Fresh Natural Milk To Tainted Milk

Amid the scandal over tainted milk, a Chinese mother with an eye for business opportunity has stirred controversy by offering to breast-feed other children—at a price.

The 32-year-old woman surnamed Huang said she is producing more milk than her 3-month-old son can consume, so she is offering to sell the surplus, straight from the source, for 300 yuan (US$44) a day.
"Every day, I had to dispose of more than two kilograms milk, which was a great pity," said Huang. "Too much milk made me feel uncomfortable, and I had to get up every night to express it."

Huang, who lives in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, said she had received about 30 phone calls from prospective clients but had had no takers.
“My husband fully supports for me on this,” she said in her online advertisement on Tianyaclub.com under the name “Bushisgood”.
She said she would prefer customers to live with her, or rent a house nearby, which could cost about 1,000 yuan ($146) a month, to allow their babies to benefit from the freshness of the milk.

If prospective customers have doubts about her own health or the safety of her milk, Huang said, she is willing to undergo a comprehensive physical examination.

UPDATE: 30 SEPT 2008

More than 13000 infants had developed kidney stones and four infants have died after drinking baby formula tainted with melamine, a chemical illegally added to give false protein readings in tests.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us
Common symptoms of kidney stones could include: excruciating pain, sore back, back spasms, abdominal and groin pain, bloody and cloudy urine, fatigue, nausea, fever and chills. And these unforgiving symptoms can last for months until the kidney stones are removed.

China's first "footprint in space"a success

The man who made China's historic first 'footprint in space' returned safely to earth on Sunday after a historic mission that boosted national pride and took his country one step closer to the moon.

Zhai Zhigang

Zhai Zhigang and two other astronauts on the Shenzhou VII craft landed safely around 5.44 p.m (0944 GMT) in northern Inner Mongolia region.
His successful space walk in a $4.4 million, domestically designed, suit caps an eventful year for China in which it has both coped with the tragedy of the devastating Sichuan earthquake and revelled in the Beijing Olympics.

The achievement was hailed by Communist Party leaders as a success for the whole nation and during his twenty minutes outside the craft -- but tethered to it to prevent him floating off -- the son of a snack-seller unveiled a small Chinese flag.

It was China's third manned space mission. The ability to 'space walk' is key to a longer-term goal of assembling a space lab and then a larger space station, and maybe one distant day making a landing on the moon.
The fast-growing Asian power wants to be sure of a say in the future use of space and its resources, and its space programme has come a long way since late leader Mao Zedong lamented that China could not even launch a potato into space.

Its first manned spaceflight was in 2003, followed by a two-man flight in 2005. The only other countries that have sent people into space are Russia and the United States.
China remained far behind the two leading space powers, Russia and the United States.

Man in trouble for faking tiger photos

Zhou Zhenglong, the farmer who shocked the country with his fake photo of the endangered South China tiger, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Saturday in northwest China's Shaanxi Province.

Zhou was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and also fined 2,000 yuan

The Xunyang County People's Court also fined him 2,000 yuan (about 292 U.S. dollars) after convicting him of fraud.
According to the court, Zhou, 54, a farmer in Zhenping County, heard he might get an award of more than 100,000 yuan (14,606 U.S. dollars) if he could take pictures of a wild South China tiger. It is a subspecies that has not been seen for years.
Zhou came up with the idea of faking tiger photos for the prize.
On Oct. 3, 2007, he shot 62 photos of a tiger from a poster which he put amid foliage.

The provincial forestry department announced the news to the public on Oct. 12 and rewarded Zhou with 20,000 yuan (2,921 U.S. dollars).
But doubts arose immediately on the Internet, after netizens found an old Lunar New Year commemorative poster showing a tiger that resembled the photo.
