Kavita parading the RM100mil dress, which was unveiled at the Mercedes Benz Stylo Fashion Grand Prix Awards 2009 in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
All eyes were drawn to it as actress Kavita Sidhu slowly sashayed down the runway in the glittery, off-shoulder burgundy gown.
Trailing behind her was a 6m-long train studded with diamonds and Swarovski crystals while a spectacular 70 carat tear-drop diamond from international jeweller Mouawad sparkled on the gown’s left bustier.
The team at Jendela KL is working on the dress.
A pair of Datuk Jimmy Choo shoes completed the ensemble.
STYLO International president and CEO Datuk Nancy Yeoh said the gown “puts Malaysia on the map of fashion design.”
Yeoh explained that the idea for the dress had begun as a simple red gown designed by Jendela KL’s Faisol Abdullah for her.
“But when Mouawad agreed to put their personal touch to it, this was the result.
“To commission a dress like this is not easy but we managed to gain their (Mouawad) confidence with Faisol’s great design. I’m very proud,” said Yeoh after the fashion show held at Lake Gardens here.
On whether the gown with such a hefty price tag had been purchased, Yeoh said there were potential buyers and that it would be shown to them soon.
Without divulging who they were, Yeoh said the “Nightingale of Kuala Lumpur” would be travelling to three cities in the Middle East.
“But it’s still too early to tell. The gown has just been unveiled and there may be more interested parties. Who knows?” she shrugged.
The dress can be customised to the needs of the buyer and 5% from its sale will be donated to a Gaza fundraising under Raja Azureen Sultan Azlan Shah’s charity.
Present at the event were former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, his wife Tun Jeanne Abdullah and Mercedes Benz president and CEO Peter Honegg.
